About Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya (SSVV)
Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya (SSVV), Varanasi, is a premier state university dedicated to the teaching, research and preservation of Sanskrit language, literature and Indian traditional knowledge systems. The universityâs roots trace back to the early Sanskrit colleges in Varanasi and it has evolved into a modern institution offering classical and contemporary courses that combine tradition with modern scholarship.
Located at Jagatganj / Chaukaghat in Varanasi, SSVV focuses on disciplines such as Veda, Vedanga, Vyakarana (grammar), Nyaya (logic), Mimamsa, Jyotisha (astronomy/astrology), Puranetihasa (epics & history), and also offers allied modern subjects like Education, Library Science, Social Sciences and Language studies.
History & Establishment
The universityâs lineage dates back to 1791 with the establishment of Government Sanskrit College in Varanasi. As a dedicated university, Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya was established in 1958 (gazetted later) with the objective of fostering Sanskrit learning at a high academic level. The university is named after the great scholar Sampurnanand and serves as one of the key centres of Sanskrit scholarship in India.
Over the decades SSVV has preserved numerous manuscripts, built specialized libraries and developed a network of affiliated Sanskrit colleges across Uttar Pradesh.
